Top Tips for Decorating Your Christmas Tree
Decorating a Christmas tree is one of the most exciting and highly anticipated activities in the run up to Christmas. Whether you prefer a classic look, a modern aesthetic, or something uniquely personal, the process of transforming a tree into a festive centrepiece is fun for the whole family. We've teamed up with We R Christmas to bring you five top tips to help you create a beautifully decorated Christmas tree this holiday season.
1. Choose the Right Tree
The foundation of any beautiful Christmas tree starts with selecting the right tree. Consider whether you prefer a real or artificial tree. Real trees offer a traditional scent and aesthetic, while artificial trees provide convenience and longevity. When selecting a real tree, look for one that is fresh, with vibrant green needles that bend but do not break. For artificial trees, choose a model that fits your space and style preferences. We went for the 7ft Mixed Pine tree which is the ideal height for our room and combines the look of a real tree with the practicalities of an artificial tree. It was easy to assemble and packs down into a surprisingly small box making it ideal if you're limited on storage. Also consider whereabouts you will place your tree for best visual impact. Don't forget, always make sure you measure your space before you choose your tree!
2. Establish a Theme or Colour Scheme
Before diving into the decorations, decide on a theme or colour scheme for your tree. This will guide your choices and create a cohesive look. Popular themes include:
Traditional: Red and gold decorations with classic ornaments and garlands.
Modern: Metallics paired with monochromatic colours or bold jewel tones.
Rustic: Natural elements such as wood, pinecones and earthy colours for a cosy, homey feel.
Whimsical: Bright colours, playful ornaments, and fun accents that evoke a sense of joy.
Once you've established your theme, you can either keep it simple or gather other decorations that fit within and enhance your aesthetic.
3. Layer Your Decorations
A well-decorated tree is all about depth and dimension. To achieve this, start with a solid base and layer your decorations strategically:
Lights: Begin by stringing lights evenly around the tree. Start from the base and work your way up, weaving the lights in and out of the branches for a twinkling effect. Consider using warm white lights for a classic look, cooler white for more modern aesthetics, or coloured lights for a festive feel.
Garlands: If you're using a garland then now is the time to add it. Choose from options like ribbon, beads, or tinsel, depending on your theme. Drape the garland loosely around the tree, allowing it to cascade down the branches. This adds texture and visual interest.
Baubles: Baubles are a must. If you like to keep it simple, then there's nothing wrong with not venturing any further from this classic Christmas tree staple. Although we'd recommend having a mixture of sizes and textures to add interest and plenty of sparkle.
Ornaments: However, if you prefer a busier look then you can add other ornaments. Arrange from the largest to the smallest, distributing them evenly across the tree. Place larger ornaments deeper in the branches for added depth and use smaller ornaments on the tips of the branches. This is a great opportunity to include more sentimental items, like homemade decorations, themed items, or ornaments that mean something special to you.
Tree Topper: Don't forget the finishing touch! A tree topper can be anything from a classic star or angel to a unique bow like we've gone for. Make sure it complements your overall theme and stands out as the crowning glory of your tree.
Decorating a Christmas tree is more than just an aesthetic task; it's a meaningful tradition that can bring families together and create lasting memories. By choosing the right tree, establishing a cohesive theme and layering decorations thoughtfully you can create a stunning tree that embodies the spirit of the season, and is perfect for your home. Embrace the joy of the process and let your creativity shine. Happy decorating!
